Shorts: the shorts (Kurze Hosen) were made of the same design and cut as the long trousers, but reached down only to the knees and with slightly widening legs. They were also made of a cord-like ribbed cloth as well as standard tropical cloth. Knee-length stockings and lance-up boots were the prescribed wear with shorts. Soldiers of the DAK often wore the shorts with the knee-high lance-up boots, probably for protection against snakes and thorns. Socks, even white socks, rolled down to the top of the lace-up boots were common, but certainly non-regulation. <uniform & traditions of the german army 1933-1945 by John R.
